MONOPLANE GLIDERS
Extending from the bar (N) up beside the forward wing-bars, and projecting 19 inches above the bars, are two masts secured by sockets to N, and by lashing and metal clips to the wing-beams. These masts support No. 12 piano-wire stays (F) which support the forward beams of each plane. From the lower side of this forward bar of the wings other wires (F, F) are brought down to N, and these must be set up until the wing-bars are "drooped" or arched as shown in the cuts.
The rear bars of each wing are not trussed, but are hinged at (Q, Q) so that they droop or hang loosely at their ends quite a bit lower than the forward bars. From the ends of these loose rear bars, control-cords (E, E) run over pulleys on N, and are attached to the short stirrup-bar (M), which is 14 inches long and serves as a foot-rest for the operator, who sits on the seat (P), which is merely a padded bar or saddle, and may be made from an old bicycle seat.
By pressing on the right or left side of the stirrup-bar the cords (which are crossed) pull down the opposite wing-tips.
This also aids in balancing the machine; but equilibrium is mainly maintained by the automatic action of the huge tail or fin (C) attached to the rudder (D).
By pressing down on the stirrup-bar equally with both feet all the rear wing-tips are drawn down with a sort of brake effect which causes the glider to land as lightly as a feather.
In addition to these controls a very effective longitudinal control can be obtained by pulling down the cord and pulleys on the rear wing (B) which thus alters the curve of the rear plane as related to the forward plane. The tail, or rudder (D), and the fin (C) are framed from light spruce half-and-half jointed and clamped with aluminum angle-irons and stayed by wires from one edge to the other.
